A delegation from the Lesotho Electoral Commission (IEC) visited the National Electoral Commission

On Wednesday, 13/05/2026, a team of commissioners and staff from the Lesotho IEC, led by Commissioner Pontso Mamatlere Matete, who are in a study tour to Rwanda, visited the National Electoral Commission.

During their discussions with the leadership of the National Electoral Commission, they were briefed on its structure and functioning, how elections are organized in Rwanda and the laws governing them, the role of various stakeholders such as local leaders, non-governmental organizations, the media, and other stakeholders involved in elections.

They were explained some of the legal provisions that define the principles that Rwanda adheres to, including the principle of gender equality in the Constitution which allocates 30% in all decision-making positions to women, and the principle of non-discrimination, which gives youth and people with disabilities positions in the National Assembly, the Chamber of Deputies, but also in other administrative entities.

Their curiosity was also on the role of women in elections, the electoral laws that ensure that they are elected in large numbers in decision-making organs, briefly  the steps that Rwanda has taken and how they were achieved.

The leadership of the National Electoral Commission of Rwanda  explained to them in detail what the electoral laws provide, the elected positions, and how Political Parties distribute seats in the National Assembly.

The guests were satisfied with the explanations they received, and they appreciated they were received in NEC, and the explanations they received.
